Using Tarot Images to Build Your Dreams
By Geraldine Amaral
Tarot Cards are not only about peering into the future. EACH of the images on the 78 cards portray an archetype –- a universal human trait, behavior or experience. The images on each card, when properly meditated on, initiate you into the ancient and expansive wisdom associated with the archetype and integrate its "teaching" into your psyche. As you look at a specific Tarot image, the mind is invited to experience its energies and to absorb its higher wisdom. Meditating on a certain card allows you to raise your own energy to the higher vibration which is contained in the wisdom of the image. As you study an image or place it in some strategic spot in your home, you infuse your mind with the transformative wisdom of the image, allowing it to nourish your inner self. The information stored in the unconscious mind is symbolic. Therefore, we can use the Tarot as a means of communicating with the unconscious in a powerful way, in its own "language." Creative visualization is a technique that utilizes positive imagery to help you attract your desires, or to reinvent yourself. It is an excellent way of communicating with the unconscious mind. In creative visualization, you focus on a mental picture -- imagining that which you seek, as if it were already so. There is an expression which states, "Change your thoughts, change your destiny." This is the principle underlying the use of creative visualization. Using the Tarot imagery, you can change your destiny by making changes in your energetic patterns. This mental imaging can work in any area of life. The Tarot’s images are particularly useful for visualization since they portray universal life experiences. The images of the Tarot are able to bypass the every-day mind and the ego and directly retrieve the principles which they reflect from deep within. The symbols on the cards call forth the pure, untainted archetypal experiences associated with the cards, which are embedded in your unconscious, and then activates those concepts. The logical mind, with all its chattering, calculating, rationalizing, justifying, blaming and criticizing is circumvented. As the saying goes, "A picture is worth a thousand words." Creative visualization allows you to "magnetize" yourself! You become a magnet for what you seek – you energize yourself to attract some experience, event or person. Magnetization encourages you to pay close attention to your thoughts and actions. It is based on the psychology of Edgar Cayce, the psychic healer, when he spoke of the "mind as the builder." Cayce’s psychology is based on the notion that ultimately everything in the universe is a vibration, including thoughts. The symbols of the Tarot cards can influence your thoughts and the images you visualize, both consciously and unconsciously; you can magnetize yourself to receive those healing and nurturing energies associated with the teaching of an archetype. Creative visualization is a powerful method for creating a more positive self-image and for nurturing a more loving attitude. The archetype becomes your "role model" as you experiment with the persona of the entity depicted on the card to determine if this new identity is one you want to adopt. Your goal is to impregnate the unconscious mind with the more elevated message of the archetype. For example, meditating on the Strength card may help you to be a more loving, tolerant and forgiving person. The card may remind you that you can forgive (i.e., tame) your own shortcomings and failings as well as the faults of others. The parts of yourself that you dislike (as symbolized by the lion) are the parts which also suffer the most and, therefore, need your unconditional love and acceptance. By meditating on Strength, you can infuse your mind with this image of gentle courage, acceptance and compassion. (See Strength card above)
The Tarot metaphorically reminds us to be cognizant of our thoughts. It provides a tool that enables us to feel we have some control or causation in making both inner and outer changes that conform to our goals and desires. When you select a card that depicts a certain inner quality which you seek to develop, such as compassion from the Strength card, or spiritual wisdom from the Hermit or creativity from the Empress card, you are taking charge of your life and destiny. You can also take charge by selecting a card that emphasizes an external characteristic as well: such as the Emperor, to improve your organizational skills, or the Chariot, to take control of your life. When you begin utilizing the Tarot images with sincerity, when you learn to picture your dreams and desires using the Tarot images, be prepared for your life to change. So tonight, light a candle, breathe deeply, imagine that which you seek. Choose a Tarot image that expresses your desire, study it carefully; let it's power infuse your psyche. |
